Treble Chef Slinging Spatulas and Guitars

Richard Kemp has over 30 years of experience in kitchens and restaurants both in Australia and North America. His recently-sold restaurant ‘Eschalot’ in Berrima held 11 prestigious Chef’s Hat awards and a Two Wine Glass Rating in Gourmet Traveller’s Wine List of the Year.
After long hours in the kitchen and before the internet, Richard enjoyed jamming with friends and work colleagues after work. He has been playing in several bands and has been lucky enough to jam with some of Australia’s rock royalty. He can play guitar, bass and drums. A passion that continues today.
Chefs and music go way back. There are many similarities between creating food and creating music. The menu is like a set-list. Playing live is like being in service and on the pass. Dinner guests are like concert goers. It’s no surprise that there is a long history of chefs doubling as musicians.
These days Richard is more likely to be slinging a guitar than a spatula,
He is the epitome of a well-rounded food service professional and we are indeed fortunate to have this industry titan present a masterclass at South Coast Food and Wine. Maybe if we ask nicely, he’ll sling on his guitar and finish his masterclass with a solo.
